HISTORY
Pioneer Drive Baptist Church had its beginning in October 1938,
with
the vision of Paul Morgan, a dedicated man who saw a need for a
church
in our community. He held a revival at the corner of Sowers Rd. and
and Beltline Rd., and when interest aroused, he started a Sunday
School in the old Sowers School.
Sowers Community Church was organized a few weeks later with seven
charter members. Later, the name was changed to Sowers Missionary
Baptist Church, and In February 1964, the name was changed to Pioneer
Drive Baptist Church.
Property was donated for the purpose of building the church on the north-west corner or Sowers Rd. and
Beltline Rd. In 1939, with
the building completed, the church called Paul Morgan as
pastor. In October 1945 the church voted to join the Southern
Baptist Convention. W. M. Biggs was pastor at the time this happened.
In March 1986 the church relocated to the present location due to
the widening of both Beltline and Pioneer Dr. (formerly Sowers Rd.)
and the construction of a shopping center near the property.
Pioneer Drive Baptist Church is proud to be celebrating 70-plus
years of serving Christ, "on the corner where you are," as current
pastor Bobby Joe Raper is fond of saying. We look forward to
celebrating our 75th anniversary in 2013!
